The Faculty of Allied Medical Sciences

The Faculty of Allied Medical Sciences has four Departments namely: Department of Medical Laboratory Science; Department of Nursing Science; Department of Public Health; and Department of Radiography & Radiological Science. The Faculty also has the following programmes: Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science programme (BMLS); Bachelor of Nursing Science programme (B.NSc); Bachelor of Physiotherapy programme (B.PT); Bachelor of Science in Public Health programme (B.Sc.); and Bachelor of Radiography & Radiological Science programme (B.Rad.). Postgraduate programmes are also offered in the following Departments: Medical Laboratory Science (having sub-specialty areas like Chemical Pathology, Haematology & Blood Group Serology, Histopathology, Medical Microbiology/Parasitology), Nursing Science, Public Health and Radiography & Radiological Science.

The Faculty of Biological Sciences

The Faculty of Biological Sciences was created on 28th May, 2015 at the 203rd Meeting of Senate, University of Calabar following the splitting of the erstwhile Faculty of Science into two Faculties, Biological Sciences and Physical Sciences.

There are Five (5) departments in the Faculty of Biological; Sciences viz Genetics & Biotechnology, Plant & Ecological Studies (Former Botany), Microbiology, Zoology & Environmental Biology and Science Laboratory Technology.

Departments of Plant & Ecological Studies, Genetics & Biotechnology and Zoology & Environmental Biology had full accreditation status effective in the year 2014. Department of Microbiology had full accreditation status effective in the year 2017 while Department of Science Laboratory Technology is preparing for resource verification.

College of Medicine

Faculty comprises of sixteen (16) departments: Internal Medicine, Surgery, Community Medicine, Family Medicine, Padiatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Radiology, Otorhinolaryngology, Anaesthesiology, Ophthalmology, Pathology, Haematology, Chemical Pathology, Medical Microbiology & Parasitology, Orthopaedics and Traumatology and Psychiatry.

College of Dentistry

FACULTY OF DENTISTRY with five Departments. The Departments are: Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Child Dental Health, Department of Preventive Dentistry, Department of Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine, as well as Department of Restorative Dentistry.

College of Basic Medical Sciences

The Faculty is totally committed to delivering on its core mandate of teaching, Research and Community service through the Departments of Anatomy Sciences, Biochemistry, Human Physiology and Pharmacology. The various Departments award both Undergraduate (Bachelor of Science), post – Graduate Diploma and degrees (Msc, MPhil, PhD) in various areas of specialization. The Department of Biochemistry also offers a Bachelor of Science degree programme in Human Nutrition and Dietetics.

Our Curricula is in the various programmes are geared towards developing a global competitive graduate with diverse kills for the world of work. Our staff are very dedicated and poised to challenge our students to put in their best while ensuring that they also gain practical experiences.

All the undergraduate programmes run for four (4) years and each academic year has two (2) semesters of four months each. Our academic session usually begins in October of each year.

The Faculty of Physical Sciences

There are six (6) Departments and eight (8) programmes in the Faculty. The Departments are Physics, Pure & Applied Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science. The Department of Physics runs programmes in Pure Physics and Geophysics. The Department of Pure & Applied Chemistry runs porgrammes in Chemistry and Applied Chemistry. The Department of Geology runs programme in Geology. Departments of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science also run programmes in Mathematics, Statistics and Computer science.

The Faculty of Management Sciences

The Faculty of Management Sciences is the youngest Faculty in the University of Calabar, having been established in October, 2002. The Faculty comprises four departments namely: Accounting, Banking and Finance, Business Management and Marketing. The Faculty has as its philosophy the promotion of academic excellence in all its departments.

As is the case in most Faculties of Management Sciences nation-wide, all the departments within the Faculty suffer from acute academic staff shortages. To tackle and solve this problem, the Faculty mounted Ph.D Programmes in all the departments beginning from the 2003/2004 session for willing junior academic staff. Quite recently, thirteen of the junior academic staff have completed their Ph.D programmes in the areas of Accounting, Banking and Finance and Marketing, while one in the department of Business Management has completed and is yet to defend his thesis.

The Faculty of Oceanography

Faculty of Marine Sciences (now Oceanography). The Faculty has a cream of high calibre scientists trained in Europe, the United States of America and Asia, in different aspects of Oceanography. Presently, efforts are directed towards understanding the dynamics of the oceanographic processes and the ecology of the Gulf of Guinea and the adjoining coastal waters. The Faculty is the first of its kind in Africa responsible for teaching and research in ocean sciences.

RESEARCH AREAS:

Physical Oceanography: Areas of research include Marine meteorology, characterizing and modeling the physical properties and processes of oceans, climate change. Chemical Oceanography: Research areas include Ocean Chemistry, toxicology, pollution, coastal hydrography, marine biogeochemistry, nano particles research, tracer Oceanography, atmospheric Chemistry/ climate change. Geological Oceanography: Research areas include Coastal Geomorphology, sediment reconstruction histories, deep sea basins, Marine Sedimentology and Palaeontology. Biological Oceanography: Areas of research include Marine Ecology, Capture Fisheries/ management, Benthic Ecology, Marine Pollution, Marine Microbiology and Marine Ecosystem /Conservation. Mariculture & Marine Fisheries Resources: Areas of research include Pathology of Marine Organisms, Fish Parasitology, Fish Culture/Nutrition, Fish Genetics, Cage Culture and management and Fish feed formulation. Marine Economy and resources sustainability.
